A Brief History: How Societies Came to Be

IEEE was born in 1963 from the merger of two major organizations: the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). While AIEE had a more centralized committee structure, IRE’s decentralized Professional Groups — which allowed for agile and focused activity — eventually shaped what we now know as IEEE Societies.

By 1970, these groups had fully transformed into Societies, serving as the backbone of IEEE’s technical engine. Today, they continue to evolve and expand as new fields emerge.
